Our packing process

We aren’t a one-approach company, and we understand that every packing requirement is different. This is why we tailor every packing job to suit the item, the journey and the destination.

Whether you’re shipping delicate instruments or heavy industrial machinery, our process ensures your goods arrive safely and securely while adhering to compliance regulations.

What is export packing?

Export packing involves preparing goods for international shipment for their safe and secure arrival, while also adhering to shipping and customs regulations.

It goes beyond standard packaging, taking into account long transit times, rough handling, and exposure to the elements; something we have experience in.

Whether you’re shipping heavy machinery, sensitive electronics, or delicate components, export packing involves using the right materials, protective techniques and custom-built cases to safeguard your goods for the whole journey.

Initial assessment

We start by reviewing the size, weight, fragility, and destination of your goods. This helps us determine the right materials and level of protection required.

Case design and build

Having completed the initial assessment, we’ll design and manufacture a custom case in-house. All our timber packaging is ISPM15 certified and built to withstand international transit conditions.

Protective packing

We use high-quality materials such as vapour barriers, corrosion inhibitors, shock-absorbing foams, and heat-sealed shrink wrap to ensure maximum protection of your item.

On-site or off-site packing

We can pack your goods at our facility or send a team to your site, whichever works best for you. Either way, we handle everything from careful loading to final sealing.

If we’re working on-site, we bring everything needed to carry out the work. Fully trained and licensed staff use specialist equipment, such as cranes and forklifts, to handle your goods safely and with care. As part of our commitment to safety, we can also provide risk assessments and method statements for the packaging and handling of your goods on-site.

Container loading (if required)

If your shipment is heading overseas in a container, we’ll secure it properly to avoid movement or damage during transport. We can also manage flat rack, open top or air freight loading.

Final checks and paperwork

Once packed, we’ll carry out a final inspection and supply all the necessary documentation to support your shipment, including ISPM15 certification and packing lists.

Export & Packing FAQs

1. Do I need export packing if my goods are already boxed?

In most cases, yes. A standard box is insufficient to cope with the demands of international transport and shipping, and the last thing you want is damaged goods. Export packing adds an extra layer of protection using specialist materials and methods suited to long-distance travel, handling, and climate conditions.

2. Can you pack hazardous or high-value goods for export?

Yes, we’re experienced in packing hazardous items and high-value equipment. We follow all relevant regulations and ensure the right certifications and packaging materials are used to keep the shipment compliant and secure.

3. What is ISPM15 and why does it matter?

ISPM15 is an international standard for wood packaging used in export. It requires the timber to be treated with heat or Methyl-Bromide fumigation to kill any pests that could live in the wood and prevent them from being carried to other countries. Many countries won’t accept wooden packaging that isn’t ISPM15 certified.

4. Can you help with export documentation?

Absolutely. We can provide packing lists, ISPM15 certificates, and help ensure your paperwork is in order to prevent delays at customs. If you need freight forwarding support, we can assist with that too.

5. Do you offer reusable or eco-friendly packaging options?

Yes, our cases are built with usability in mind. Our aim is to build cases that can be re-used, saving you money and saving on packaging waste.

We use eco-friendly packaging wherever possible, and Tuplin is audited by the UK Wood Packaging Material Marking Programme, meaning we have been approved by the Forestry Commission to provide ISPM15 timber.

All the timber we use is also HT 56/30 ISPM certified, making our products compliant with international standards and suitable for use worldwide.

Let us know if you have environmental requirements, too, and we’ll work with you to find the right solution.

6. How much notice do you need for export packing?

Generally, it depends on the size of the job, as well as how complex it is, but we’re often able to respond quickly, especially for time-sensitive shipments. Get in touch as early as possible and we’ll do our best to work around your schedule.

7. Can you follow our specific packing requirements?

Yes, absolutely. If you have your own packing specifications or specifications that were provided from your customer, we’re more than happy to work with them. We regularly follow detailed customer-supplied packing guidelines and ensure everything is executed to the required standard. If you don’t have your own specs, we can provide expert recommendations and packing solutions based on your needs.
